Parallels
and Windows 98
SE
It may be dead to Microsoft, but I run Win98SE on paralles for three
reasons.
- Most "Windows only" programs will run on 98SE.
- I am familiar with 98SE (I didn't play with XP much).
- You need to buy a new XP license to install on a mac. Win98
disks are
readily available and you don't have to ask "mother-may-I?" with
Microsoft for permission to install it on your machine.
Install
The instructions were easy enough. Make sure to load the "Parallels
tools" within the Win98 program. That will get your display to work
properly. I also disabled network access. I don't plan on taking a
windows
virtual machine on the internet- too many viruses out there.
Next install printers and Windows only programs you "must" have. There
is likely a Mac equivilent, but finding one (that is free and upgraded
to Universal) may take a while. My Garmin
GPS doesn't work well on a mac. I had to buy a serial to USB cable and
it only works on Windows. Anyway, I have GPS programs, games, and
printers that are Windows only.
You will need to have a Microsoft CD ejecting program.
Make note of the Win98 limitations:
- You can't share a folder with mac (for that you'll
need XP, bummer). You will have to create *.iso images of cds all the
time to transfer files. Or maybe get a usb drive to connect and
unconnect.
- Get used to pressing ctrl+alt to release your mouse. That
seamless
mouse flow action is only available to XP kids.
